A Day in the Life of an English Teacher Living in Budapest

Hi everyone! Since I've been living in Budapest for the better part of six months now, I thought I would do a day in the life post so you could see what an average day looks like for me. When I was in the Peace Corps, I did a Day in the Life of Pre-Service Training which you can read here. I captured my day with pictures and will include them below as I describe what my day looked like. For reference, I recorded all of this on Thursday, January 19th, 2023. With all of that being said, let's begin!

I started the day by waking up to my alarm at 7am. My teaching schedule here is amazing because I don't begin until at least 9am or 10am most days. Once I woke up, I headed for the bathroom to start to get ready.

I showered the night prior so it didn't take me long to get ready. After I finished in the bathroom, I went and did my makeup in our spare bedroom.

One of the desks turns into a vanity which I love! I don't wear much makeup on a daily basis but like to put a little on most days.

After I finished getting ready, I started my quiet morning time. During this time, I like to take some time to do a breathing or meditation exercise, journal, respond to emails, and look at my planner to get ready for the day.

Next, I took my daily medicine and supplements before tidying up the house a bit.

I made some coffee to go which is almost always necessary when it comes to teaching first grade or teaching of any kind for that matter.

I grabbed some breakfast to eat on the go!

Then, I packed my backpack and lunch before leaving the apartment around 8am.

My school is on the Buda side of Budapest but further north of where we live in Buda so I take the train there everyday. First, I have about a 15 minute walk to the train stop. Above is a picture of our neighborhood.

Here I am waiting at the train stop.

My school!

After the train ride which is usually about 15-20 minutes, I have another 10 minute walk before I arrive at school.

Once I made it to school, I set up in the teacher room for planning with my co-teachers from 9-11am. I teach English by myself but all the other subjects I teach (math, art, craft, music, and science), are taught with one of my two Hungarian co-teachers. My manager joins us every planning session to translate if needed.

After planning, I walked over to my classroom where I had two lessons back to back- English and math. After math, it was time to take the kids to lunch!

After lunch, I taught my last lesson of the day from 1:45-2:30 pm. Once it was over, I headed home via the train.

Once I arrived home, I wanted to have some down time so I read and eventually took a little nap. Dan and I are currently re-reading the Harry Potter series together! We both love the books and the movies but have never read it before together until now. We're currently on "Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire".

After I rested, Dan and I headed for the gym. It's only a 5 minute walk away which is really convenient! We started off with a mile run before doing an intense leg day which has left me feeling really sore the following day!

On the way home, we grabbed takeout from one of our favorite Chinese restaurants for dinner. We try to cook when we can but hey it didn't happen today which I was fine with.

Clean and in my fresh pajamas!

After showering and eating dinner, I got ready for bed which brings me to the end of my day! I hope you enjoyed reading my Day in the Life of an English Teacher Living in Budapest post. Please comment below if you have any questions or comments- I look forward to reading and answering them! Also, please let me know if you have any requests for other blog posts like this. Thank you for reading!

Loved this insight into your day! Typically how is the weather? I'm curious about you having to walk in inclement weather. Cheers, Niki!

Laurie, thank you so so much I really appreciate you always supporting me! The weather is similar to the Midwest at this time of year in that it's cold and winter; however, it does not get as cold and is very mild! It's not too bad :) Cheers, Laurie! Miss you lots!
