Hi everyone! I hope you have all had a good start to 2022. It's hard to believe that we're already halfway through February! This past weekend, I took a weekend trip to Montezuma, Costa Rica! Since we didn't have school on Monday, the 14th, Dan, three of our teacher friends, and I wanted to get off the mountain and take in all the sun and sea we could.
On Fridays, we get done with work early at 2 pm. We took the 3 pm bus to Puntarenas. Puntarenas is a port town on the Nicoya Gulf. We've been here many times before usually to transfer to a different bus. This time, we hopped on the 8 pm ferry to Paquera.
The ferry ride took about an hour and a half. Once we made it to the Paquera Port, we got a taxi into town to our hostel. We spent the night at the Mauras Tropical Mini Hostel. Paquera was fine for the night especially since we needed to rest before the next leg of our journey but I wouldn't recommend staying there longer than that. The town had what we needed but it didn't much in terms of entertainment. It also did not feel the safest at night.
We woke up the following morning and took the 8:30 am bus to Cobano. From there, we took a taxi to Montezuma. As you can see, it was quite the journey. We dropped off our bags at our hostel, Hostel Tajalin. I instantly fell in love with the town of Montezuma. It's very small and very quaint but very lively. And the best part is it's on the beach!
Next, we stopped at a local cafe for some lunch. We ate at the Soda Monte Sol which was delicious and had a view of the ocean. It was hard to wait until later to jump in the water so I took a quick dip in while everyone else was finishing up lunch.
After lunch, we made our way to the Montezuma Waterfalls. It's only a 10 minute walk from town and then about a 20 minute hike into the forest. You can follow the river and walk alongside. The Montezuma Waterfalls are absolutely beautiful! There are about 3 different pools that you can swim around in and jump off rocks into. All of them are fairly big. We stayed the longest at the first pool. I greatly enjoyed diving and jumping off of the rocks.
There were two options to get to the second pool. You could take the stairs or take a difficult leveled trail. We chose the hike up to the second pool and it was not for the faint-of-hearted. There was a lot of climbing involved but we greatly enjoyed it! If you decide to go this route, make sure you are prepared with the appropriate hiking shoes and gear.
After the falls, we watched the sunset on the beach before showering at the hostel and then going out for dinner. For dinner, we ate at Cafe Organico! We had a great time and enjoyed some live music as we devoured our food.
On Sunday, February 13th, we set out to have a beautiful beach day. Although the Montezuma Beach is very nice, I read excellent reviews on Playa Grande which is about a 30 minute walk down the beach and through the jungle. There's no access to it via road so it's very low key with not many people. The beach lived up to my expectations and we had an amazing day. Dan, Ian, and I rented surfboards and spent a few hours surfing. That was definitely one of my favorite parts of the trip (I'm always down to surf). We had some drinks, read, and chilled in the shade and in the water for the rest of the afternoon.
After our long day on the beach, we made the journey back to Montezuma for a late lunch/early dinner. We all ended up passing out by 9 pm! That's how you know it was a great day.
On Monday, February 14th, we made the long journey home. It went much faster than the journey to Montezuma. Since we had school the next day, we made it a goal to get home in the early afternoon in order to have time to relax and prepare for the week ahead of us. Overall, this trip was filled with beautiful sights, action, and amazing people. I can't wait until I can return to Montezuma. If you are in Costa Rica or thinking of making a trip, I would definitely recommend putting Montezuma on your list!
