Hello and welcome back for part 2 of 3 of my spring break recap for 2023! If you haven't read part 1 already, you can find it here. At the end of part 1, we were leaving Nuremberg, Germany on a train for Berlin! The train takes right around 3 hours. We got into Berlin around 4pm on Friday, April 7th. We bought 24 hour transport passes and headed to our AirBnB to set our things down. After getting checked in, we left to do some sight seeing!
First up was the Brandenburg Gate! This is Berlin's most famous landmark and was built in the 18th century. Unfortunately, it was a rainy evening but that didn't stop us or lots of other tourists from exploring!
Next, we took a short walk over to the Reichstag building. The Reichstag is another popular sight to see if you come to Berlin. It is a historic government building that has seen many eras of Germany's politics.
Next, a sight that I had high on my list was the Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. It's located right next to the Brandenburg Gate and was opened in 2005. The memorial consists of over 2711 concrete steles. There is an information center located under the memorial.
Afterwards, we walked over to Checkpoint Charlie. This is the best-known Berlin Wall crossing point between East Berlin and West Berlin during the Cold War.
Later that night, we grabbed a delicious dinner and hopped around to different spots for drinks. We got back later in the night and slept in the next morning.
After waking up on Saturday morning, we sat down for breakfast at a cafe close to the AirBnB. The food was immense and delicious! On this day, we would be taking an overnight train to Amsterdam. So since we checked out of our AirBnB, we found a spot to store our luggage for the day.
We then made our way to the Topography of Terror Museum. It is an outdoor and indoor history museum. It is located on the site of where the Gestapo and SS headquarters were during World War II. The permanent exhibit informs visitors about the Nazi reign of terror and the crimes committed by them. This museum is free to the public and if you are ever in Berlin, I urge you to go.
Outside of the museum is a large section of the Berlin Wall still intact.
After the museum, we were craving Indian food so we found our way to Delhi 6 and it did not disappoint! The rest of the day we took it easy and slowly made our way over to the train station. And that concludes part 2 of my spring break trip! Look out for part 3 soon!
