In honor of my own long travel day today, I am excited to share some tips for how to minimize stress and boredom and maximize the fun of a long travel day. Now, I'm no expert but these are a few tips I wanted to share because they help me greatly. Let's go!
1. Pack snacks and don't forget to eat!
First up on the list of tips is food focused. I don't know about you but whenever I'm hungry, I am not the happiest person to be around. Travel can be stressful so don't add more stress by starving yourself. It's always a good idea to pack snacks of your own especially healthy ones. Although you can purchase goods at the airport or on the road, it's often more expensive to do so. Additionally, airport food isn't always the freshest or healthiest so keep that in mind. It doesn't have to be much- even a couple granola bars and a banana go a long way!
2. Download shows and movies.
Netflix, Disney Plus, Hulu, HBO Max, and pretty much any other streaming service out there offer you the option to download their content for offline use. This always save me and others who I may be traveling with too (looking at you, Dan). Personally, I love using Netflix' download feature. Some of my favorites that I've watched and been able to download in the past are Bridgerton, The Queen's Gambit, Squid Game, and Emily in Paris.
3. Bring some work to do.
Now, this might be an unpopular opinion but to me it doesn't hurt to bring a little work with you. I completely understand if you are vacationing and don't want to think about work that needs to be done at home or your job but if it's a long travel day it's something to consider. For example, I enjoy writing a blog post or grading student work. I don't put much pressure on myself to check off a lot of tasks but I do usually end up finishing some and feeling accomplished and not bored.
4. Pack a good book.
In my opinion, you should always have a book with you wherever you go. It's especially important on long travel days when you might not have access to WiFi or cell service. If you're a fast reader, might I suggest packing a couple more books. I'm currently reading "Before the Fall" by Noah Hawley which is actually about a plane crash so if you're a skeptical person, I would try choosing a different book. There's a book out there for everyone, you just gotta look for it.
5. Wear comfortable clothes and bring layers.
To me, there's nothing worse than feeling uncomfortable while traveling. Although I do like to look somewhat nice for flights, I'd much prefer comfortable over stylish. If you can get both, that's a win! During long travel days, the last thing you want to be feeling is tight in your jeans or itchy in a sweater. Choose clothes you love and are ready to wear for a long period of time. Also, layers are essential! As someone who gets cold when traveling, it's always nice to have a jacket or sweatshirt with you in your carry on. At the same time, start with a base of a t-shirt so you can always take it off if you feel too hot.
